CAIRNS CUP RESCHEDULED FOR A 2ND TIME

CAIRNS CUP UPDATE FROM OUR CEO

In these uncertain times, the directors have been faced with ongoing problems and worries caused by the COVID PANDEMIC. We have been in discussions with our host resorts, sponsors, and stakeholders as to how best we can proceed with DISABILITIES GOLF’s PRIMARY Team Event.

We have four major issues at this current time.

  1. Ensuring players can travel to the event. At moment there is considerable uncertainty as to whether the USA team and European Players from Continental Europe will be able to travel to Wales unfettered by Quarantine restrictions etc.,
  2. Uncertainty as to whether the festival of Golf, the Pro Am, Disabilities Golf Awareness Day, which is such a key part of the CAIRNS CUP experience can take place if social distancing etc is still with us.
  3. Whether Celtic Manor and indeed the host country can provide the full experience that our players, sponsors quite naturally would expect.
  4. In the current economic climate it is unlikely the event can achieve its maximum fiscal potential, important for the ongoing success of the Festival of Disabilities Golf.

After speaking to the Resort and Government officials, there is no guarantee that any of the above could be taken for granted. So, it seems illogical and irresponsible that we should consider asking players to book flights at this current juncture. Celtic Manor have been very understanding and supportive of our problems at what is a very troubling time for them. Initially they have been prepared to put the competition back a further 12 months, but of course there is no certainty the global situation will have improved.

The Directors both in Europe and USA are concerned any further delay be minimised, that the opportunity of playing at Celtic Manor is not lost and the week will include the full festival of golf. THE DIRECTORS Believe that the following is the best way to proceed to ensure the best event for players, sponsor etc. is to move the event to a date of 7th to 13th May 2022 and Play the event in LONDON at the prestigious THE SHIRE LONDON Golf Club the only Seve Ballesteros designed course in the UK.

The Shire London has of course thru the GOLF TRUST and the Menai-Davis family have a long-standing association with Disabled Golf, which we believe will allow us to deliver a festival in accordance with our expectations. Secondly playing in London, makes its less of a financial worry and probably less problems if COVID-19 still an issue. Sincere thanks to CAE and all involved at the SHIRE.

We are delighted that CELTIC MANOR have offered the same agreement for the year 2026, effectively securing the success and longevity of the event. The Directors express their Gratitude to Celtic Manor for their understanding at this difficult time.
